Dutch Coach

Dutch Pronunciation Coach helps you say real Dutch out loud. Hear a word or a short sentence in a clear Dutch voice, say it yourself, and see at once which words the app heard. Words it heard turn green, words it did not hear turn red.

It is made for learners who already read Dutch and now want to be understood: at the town hall, at the doctor, in the shop, on the train.

LESSONS BY SOUND

Ten lessons, one for each sound that trips English speakers up:

• ui, as in huis and uit
• eu, as in deur and leuk
• ij and ei, as in tijd and trein
• g and ch, as in goed and nacht
• sch and schr, as in school and schrijven
• the Dutch r
• the final -n of words like lopen and boeken
• long and short vowels, like maan and man
• ou and au, as in koud and auto
• v, w and f, as in vader, wat and fiets

LESSONS BY SITUATION

Nine lessons with the phrases you really need, in standard Dutch that people understand in the Netherlands and in Belgium:

• gemeente (the town hall)
• dokter (the doctor)
• apotheek (the pharmacy)
• werk (at work)
• school
• winkel (the shop)
• trein en bus (train and bus)
• buren (the neighbours)
• telefoon (on the phone)

Every lesson has 15 to 30 items, each with an English meaning, and the letters of the sound you practise are marked.

HOW A LESSON WORKS

1. Read the big Dutch text and its English meaning.
2. Tap Play to hear it, or Play slow to hear it at a calmer speed.
3. Read the one-line tip for the sound.
4. Hold the microphone button, say it, and let go.
5. See "I heard:" with each word in green or red. Retry, or go to the next item.

Your streak and your best score for every lesson are saved on your phone.

HONEST ABOUT WHAT IT CHECKS

This version checks the words it heard, not single sounds. If the app hears the right word, you were understood. It does not grade your accent or give a score for a single vowel.

WORKS OFFLINE

The Dutch voice and the speech recognition run on your phone. After a one-time download of the voice files, the lessons work without internet. Your voice is never recorded to a file and never sent anywhere.
